For Nannies: So You Want to Work with a Nanny Agency? Let’s Talk About How to Do It Right.

Okay, let’s get real.

You’re applying to work with a nanny agency (like us—hello!). Maybe you’ve got years of experience. Maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, if you want to land an incredible position with a great family, you need to understand one very important thing:

Professionalism starts the moment you hit "send" on that first application.

Not when you show up at the house. Not when you finally feel like it’s a “real” interview. Not when the baby starts crying and you swoop in like a superhero. Nope, it all starts the second you make contact—with us and with potential employers.

Ready to learn how to nail it? Let’s dive in.

✉️ 1. Your Emails Matter. A Lot.

Let’s start with email etiquette. Why? Because we receive dozens of emails a day. Want to stand out in a good way? Here’s how:

  • Write in full sentences.
This isn’t a text to your BFF. “Hey, is the job still open?” is not ideal. “Hi there, I saw the posting for the full-time nanny position in Boulder and would love to be considered. I’ve attached my resume for your review. Please let me know if you need anything else!” = gold.

  • Proofread, proofread, proofread.
Typos, misspelled names, and run-on sentences scream sloppy. High-end families notice. So make sure your email looks clean and polished.

  • Use a professional email address.
If your email is something like sunshinebabylover420@aol.com, it’s time for a change. Use something simple and professional like firstname.lastname@gmail.com.

  • Don’t email or interview from your car.
We can always tell. If you’re voice-typing and Siri hijacks your message, it’s a red flag. Emails that sound like you’re distracted or on-the-go are not the best first impression. Interviewing from your car? A definite RED flag!

📞 2. Your Phone Etiquette? Also a Big Deal.

We know life’s busy, but when you’re working with a professional agency, every interaction counts. Here's how to keep your phone game strong:

  • Answer the phone professionally.
“Hello, this is Sarah,” sounds a lot better than “Yeah?”

  • If you miss a call, call back promptly.
Ideally within 24 hours. Don’t leave us hanging. The job you want might not be available for long!

  • No speakerphone, no distractions, no background noise.
Treat agency calls like mini-interviews. No one wants to hear your dog barking, a vacuum running, or you chatting with your friend in the background.

  • And for the love of professionalism, don’t interview from your car.
If you're on the go and in a noisy environment, reschedule. Interviewing from your car (or any distracting environment) doesn’t give the right impression.

👗 3. Please Don’t Wear Pajamas to Your Interview.

This may seem obvious, but let’s say it anyway: Your appearance matters.

When you’re interviewing with a family (or with us), you don’t need to wear a fancy business suit. But you do need to look put together.

  • Wear clean, wrinkle-free clothes.
It doesn’t have to be a suit, but show that you’ve put thought into your appearance. It’s the little things that show you're serious.

  • No pajamas, workout clothes, or yesterday’s makeup.
The first impression you make when you walk into a home will stick. Make sure it’s a good one.

  • Smile, make eye contact, and be on time.
Simple stuff, but it goes a long way. It shows that you respect the family’s time and that you’re excited about the opportunity.

🪪 4. Present Yourself Like a Pro

Nannies are more than just caregivers—they're professional caretakers. So, how do you present that?

  • Your resume and bio should be top-notch.
No spelling errors. Clear formatting. Consistent dates. Don’t forget to highlight your most relevant experience. Your application should be clean, easy to read, and free of mistakes.

  • Show off your unique skills.
Love outdoor play and Montessori-based activities? Awesome. Have a background in child psychology or early education? Even better. Brag about it! Did you travel internationally with a family? Helped a child potty train? Share the details! Tell us about your special skills. It’s what sets you apart from the rest.

  • And please… don’t just say “I love kids.”
We get it. Most nannies do. But we want to hear what makes YOU unique. Tell a story that shows your nanny style in action. What are your strengths? Share them. What makes you different from other applicants? We want to know.

⏳ 5. Don’t Expect Endless Email Chats—Nail Your Application From the Start.

Here's the deal: many agencies (ours included) ask that you don’t email them with questions or follow-ups after you apply. Instead, you’re asked to fill out an application directly through the agency’s website.

That means the first impression is all about the application you submit.

  • Take your time with your application.
Don’t rush it. This is your opportunity to shine! A well-written, thoughtful application increases your chances of getting noticed and invited for an interview.

  • Fill out every section carefully.
Agencies like ours get dozens (sometimes hundreds!) of applications. If your application is rushed or incomplete, we might miss what makes you awesome—and that means we’ll pass it over.

  • Follow directions exactly.
If the agency asks for a photo, provide one. If they want specific information, give it to them. Don’t skip anything.

👠 6. Working with an Agency Is a Two-Way Street

Our job is to match amazing families with top-tier nannies. If you’re disorganized, late, careless in your communications, or fail to follow through—well, we can’t recommend you. Simple as that.

But if you show up prepared, follow through with grace, and bring your best self to every step? We’ll go to bat for you, every time.
